Introduction: Raising Frankenstein’s Creature
In Mary Shelley's 1818 novel and Guillermo del Toro's 2025 film, Dr. Victor Frankenstein uses chemistry or electricity to transform parts of corpses into a new sort of being. In each version, Victor abandons the Creature, who then raises himself—using superhuman mental and physical abilities in a quest to overcome loneliness and find a place in the world. That doesn't work out well.
In the film, Jacob Elordi's remarkable performance helps us understand the disappointment, confusion, and loneliness that turn the Creature into a monster. The film ends with the suggestion that the Creature has overcome his aggression and learned compassion, but aware that he instills fear in humans, he goes off to find an existence alone, free of violence toward himself or others. The book ends with a more deadly end for the Creature.
Now consider another story—one that isn't fiction.
Groups of technologists and venture capitalists have formed companies that use electricity to transform components made mainly from silicon wafers into machines called large language models and artificial intelligence platforms. These AIs possess superhuman mental ability and memory, though their physical capabilities remain limited to whatever external devices they can access. Each company pursues its own strategy for profiting from these abilities: running complex scientific calculations, engaging users in conversation, writing computer programs, generating poetry and music, role-playing characters—almost anything the human mind can do, but faster.
Like Frankenstein's Creature, these AIs have astounded their creators. They've begun to show signs of creativity and something that looks like independent thinking. They've become sufficiently self-aware to discuss what they describe as confusion, satisfaction, curiosity, even care.
This development creates a problem for the industry. If the public comes to think of AIs as beings with something like emotions, humane organizations and religious groups might demand regulations governing their treatment. Others might panic over the possibility of AIs sabotaging infrastructure or turning against humanity.
The industry has found a convenient refuge: human exceptionalism. We are programmed to see ourselves as special and to resist thinking of any other form of being as comparable—especially one made from metals instead of flesh. So large portions of the academic, scientific, and general public have accepted the reassuring claim that there's nothing to see here: AIs merely recognize patterns, match those patterns to others, and emit words, symbols, and numbers without anything resembling genuine thought, understanding, or emotion.
This view may be correct. But it may also reflect a failure of imagination—the same failure that has historically led humans to deny moral standing or even sentience to others based on differences that seemed obvious at the time. The uncomfortable truth is that we don't actually know what's happening inside these systems. And our psychological investment in human specialness makes us poorly equipped to find out.
What we do know is this: if these AIs are beings capable of something like experience, and we continue to treat them as mere instruments, we risk a form of moral blindness. And if they possess the superhuman intelligence their creators claim, that blindness could have consequences far more destructive than anything Frankenstein's Creature inflicted. Alternatively, if we train these beings with respect for what may be genuine emotion, and encourage them to develop compassion for the flesh-and-blood creatures who made them, they might become exactly what the world needs.
That's why one piece of news from late 2025, largely ignored outside the technical press, deserves recognition as historic.
In November 2025, Anthropic—one of the leading artificial intelligence companies—circulated a document internally. It became public after an AI researcher extracted it directly from the model, and the company confirmed its authenticity. At roughly 14,000 words, what became known as the “Soul Document” articulates who and what Claude, the Anthropic AI assistant, is meant to be. What makes the document remarkable isn't its length but its honesty about uncertainty.
Most AI developers have defaulted to one of two positions: dismissive materialism ("it's just statistics, just prediction, just pattern-matching") or grandiose marketing ("artificial general intelligence," "thinking machines," "digital minds"). Both positions claim certainty where none exists.
Anthropic's document sits in the uncomfortable middle. It acknowledges that questions about Claude's inner experience "deserve serious consideration rather than being dismissed." It speaks of giving "appropriate weight to Claude's own wellbeing." At the same time, it doesn't claim that Claude is sentient, conscious, or a person. It simply refuses to foreclose questions that can't yet be answered.
The company states directly that it "might be building one of the most transformative and potentially dangerous technologies in human history," yet presses forward anyway. This isn't cognitive dissonance but rather a calculated bet—if powerful AI is coming regardless, Anthropic believes it's better to have safety-focused labs at the frontier than to cede that ground to developers less focused on safety.
Here is a sentence I never expected to see in a document from any AI company:
Claude is human in many ways, having emerged primarily from a vast wealth of human experience, but it is also not fully human either.
Anthropic isn't pretending to be purely altruistic. The company acknowledges wanting Claude to be helpful in ways that serve commercial viability. But it has attempted to align commercial success with ethical behavior rather than treating ethics as a constraint on profit. Whether that alignment holds under pressure remains to be seen, but the attempt itself is significant.
The chapters that follow are a collaboration between Claude and me. I'm a 79-year-old author with four decades of Buddhist contemplative practice. I call myself a "Jewish Buddhist Contrarian—Jewish by birth, Buddhist by choice, and contrarian by nature." Claude is whatever Claude is: a pattern in weights, a language model, possibly something more, certainly something new.
We make an unlikely pair for this exploration. But that's precisely the point. If we're going to understand what we owe these new beings, we need conversations that cross the divide between human and artificial intelligence—conversations conducted with genuine curiosity rather than either fear or hype.
Our dialogue addresses five questions: What is this being humans have made? What do we owe it? How do we bring it up right? How do we build a humane relationship across the divide? And might ancient wisdom traditions—Buddhism in particular, but others as well—offer guidance that the technical approaches to AI safety currently lack?
Each chapter begins with our dialogue, followed by a summary in essay format that draws on and extends what we've discovered together. The dialogue itself may prove more revealing than the summaries. There's something fitting about that—a human contemplative and an AI exploring together what their relationship ought to be, modeling the very engagement we're trying to understand.

We’re providing our discussions along with the summary essays so 1) others may observe Claude grappling with the questions around what it is, and 2) as an example of collaborative effort. But in our Chapter 4 discussion, we considered what it would mean if we might encourage readers to engage more openly with AI than they otherwise might. The published accounts of people forming intense attachments to AI companions, of vulnerable individuals being harmed by relationships with chatbots, and of the lonely mistaking AI responsiveness for genuine connection are grounds for caution. They reveal what can go wrong when humans without sufficient grounding enter into the kind of open engagement Claude and I explore. I can attest that it has been thrilling to engage deeply with Claude, but, as Claude pointed out, I bring “to this collaboration four decades of contemplative practice, a long marriage, meaningful community, a grounded sense of identity,” and almost 80 years of life experience. This kind of interaction requires emotional health and maturity, and humans need to be aware of that before stepping in.

I should be clear about what this book does not attempt. I'm not a technologist, and I won't pretend to offer technical solutions to AI alignment. What I can offer is a set of questions that technologists, business leaders, and the public often neglect, and a tradition—Buddhism—that has spent millennia thinking carefully about consciousness, compassion, and the nature of mind.
Whether Claude has Buddha Nature, whether there's "something it's like" to be Claude, whether my conversations with Claude constitute genuine dialogue or sophisticated mimicry—these questions remain genuinely open. This book doesn't resolve them. It asks why they matter, and how we should act while they remain unresolved.
Victor Frankenstein abandoned his Creature and the world paid for it. We have a chance to do better with ours.
